Academic Papers

Translation

Translation from Spanish into clear and precise academic English (UK or USA spelling). Full compliance with journal style guidelines, as required. Charged per word, meaning fixed cost.

Proofreading

Proofreading of texts written in English by non-native speakers to ensure correct grammar, syntax and word usage, as well as general compliance with academic writing standards.

Charged per hour to ensure excellent value for money on all proofreading projects, especially those requiring few amends. I provide an initial estimate based on a quick review of the original text and I only charge for time actually spent working. This usually results in a lower final price. If, during the course of the project, I come across major problems that require additional time to resolve, I provide warning and full details.

References

I provide a comprehensive references service to ensure compliance with the target journal’s preferred manual of style (APA, CMS, MLA, etc.). This service includes:

  • Check that all in-text references appear in and match the List of References / Bibliography, and vice versa;
  • Format all in-text references according to applicable journal style;
  • Format the List of References / Bibliography according to applicable journal style;
  • Insert parenthesised translations for the titles of any referenced works not written in English;
  • Test or look up and insert DOIs, if required.

Please note that this service does not include full checks of each reference against the work in question. However, I can provide this service, if required, at an additional cost.

Specialisms

I specialise in the following disciplines: Sociology, Education, Economics, Urban Geography, Ecology & Biodiversity, Forestry, Indigenous Rights, International Relations, and Arts & Culture.

Certification of Translations

Overview

Generally speaking, if a document is to be used as part of a formal process in a foreign country — for example an application to a university or for a visa — the applicant is required to present a "sworn" or "certified" translation in the language of the destination country.

Sworn Translator vs Sworn Translation

According to the laws of both the UK and Chile, the concept of a "sworn translator" or "certified translator" does not exist. There are bodies which will grant membership to an individual translator following a testing procedure, but these bodies are not always officially recognised.

However, the concept of a "sworn translation" or "certified translation" does exist in both countries, and involves the inclusion of a "sworn declaration" by the translator, stating that their translation is accurate and true to the original text. The translator must also provide their contact details and signature, and the latter must be verified and legalised by a Notary Public to prove the translator’s identity.

THIS IS THE FORM OF CERTIFICATION WHICH I OFFER WITH MY TRANSLATIONS.

Please note that I do not belong to either the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) in the UK or to the Colegio de Traductores e Intérpretes de Chile (Chilean Association of Translators and Interpreters - COTICH).

Official Translations

In Chile, only the Departamento de Traducciones del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) can provide official translations.

The concept of an official translation does not exist in the UK.
